Bandwidth degradation QoS provisioning for adaptive multimedia in wireless/mobile networks
نویسندگان
چکیده
Adaptive multimedia is promising in wireless/mobile networks since it mitigates the ¯uctuation of resources caused by mobility in these networks. However, bandwidth adaptation entails the bandwidth degradation for some applications. In order to effectively characterize the bandwidth degradation and to provide better quality of service (QoS) to users, we propose two new QoS parameters for adaptive multimedia: the degradation ratio (DR) and the degradation degree (DD), which characterize the frequency of bandwidth degradation and the degree of bandwidth degradation, respectively. Based on DD and DR, a measurement-based call admission control framework and a K-level bandwidth adaptation algorithm are proposed to satisfy the application QoS requirements in terms of the proposed parameters, and to utilize the network resources ef®ciently. Simulations reveal that DD and DR outperform other QoS parameters in terms of effectively characterizing bandwidth adaptation. Simulations also indicate that the adaptive multimedia framework outperforms the non-adaptive multimedia services. q 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

QoS Provisioning in Wireless/Mobile Multimedia Networks Using an Adaptive Framework
Recently there is a growing interest in the adaptive multimedia networking where the bandwidth of an ongoing multimedia call can be dynamically adjusted. In the wireless/mobile multimedia networks using the adaptive framework, the existing QoS provisioning focused on the call blocking probability and the forced termination probability should be modified. We, therefore, redefine a QoS parameter ...
متن کاملQoS Provisioning of QoS in Wireless Networks carrying multimedia traffic
The provisioning of QoS in wireless networks carrying multimedia traffic imposes a big challenge to network designers and traffic engineers. Guaranteeing QoS in wireless networks is a complicated task due to the unique characteristics of wireless networks such as user mobility, limited link capacity, and frequent link failure, scarcity of bandwidth, channel fading, and inability to predict the ...
متن کاملAQuaFWiN: Adaptive QoS Framework for Multimedia in Wireless Networks and Its Comparison with other QoS Frameworks
In a wireless environment, due to topology changes and characteristics of media (interference in radio signals) the bandwidth of a link is unpredictable and possibly very low, the error rates are variable and extremely high. Provisioning and guaranteeing quality of service (QoS) in such an environment is a very challenging problem. In this paper we propose an adaptive QoS framework to support m...

Next generation multimedia wireless networks require guaranteed quality of service (QoS) over the duration of mobile connections, and also require efficient use of network resources. In this paper, bandwidth reservation scheme is proposed for QoS provisioning in multimedia wireless networks. The proposed scheme integrates user mobility information obtained by measuring Received Signal Strength ...
متن کاملAdaptive bandwidth allocation for call-level quality-of- service (QoS) in wireless mobile networks
Different quality-of-service (QoS) required types of multimedia services and need a guaranteed service rate in wireless multimedia networks. When the number of user arrivals increases, bandwidth degradations may occur due to limited bandwidth nature of cellular wireless networks. The bandwidth that should be assigned to user cannot be met for QoS provisioning in congested network. In this paper...
